JUSTIFICATION, SANCTIFICATION, AND GLORIFICATION
The Work of the Holy Spirit in Christ
The three truths of justification, sanctification, and glorification become much clearer when we understand them as a continuous work of salvation in the life of a Christian.
When a person comes to Christ, God does not merely begin making a few corrections in his life; He begins the work of a new creation. Within this work, we see three great spiritual truths: justification, sanctification, and glorification.
These are not merely three separate experiences. They are different aspects of the salvation that God accomplishes in us through Christ.
“You were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.” — 1 Corinthians 6:11
One important truth we should notice here is that neither justification nor sanctification is presented as the result of human self-effort. They are connected with the work of God and His Spirit.
- JUSTIFICATION — FROM GUILTY TO RIGHTEOUS
Justification is the act of God by which a sinful person is declared righteous before Him.
Not because of our works.
Not because of our goodness.
Not because of our religious qualifications.
It is through faith in Jesus Christ.
“Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.” — Romans 5:1
On the cross, Jesus bore the punishment for our sins. Therefore, the one who believes in Christ is no longer condemned as guilty before God.
This is a deeply important truth:
In justification, God is not first asking, “How good are you?” He is asking, “Are you in Christ?”
The righteousness of Christ is counted to the believer.
Therefore, justification changes our position before God.
Yesterday, I stood guilty before God; in Christ, today I stand righteous before Him.
But the story of salvation does not end there.
- SANCTIFICATION — THE ONE DECLARED RIGHTEOUS IS TRANSFORMED INTO HOLINESS
While justification changes our position before God, sanctification changes our life.
Sanctification is the work by which the Holy Spirit gradually transforms the person who has been justified in Christ into the character and likeness of Christ.
“For this is the will of God, your sanctification.” — 1 Thessalonians 4:3
In justification:
“You are righteous,” God declares.
In sanctification:
“Now walk in righteousness,” the Holy Spirit teaches us.
Therefore, sanctification is not merely an outward change in behaviour.
It is a transformation of the heart.
Our thoughts change. Our desires change. Our words change. Our responses change. Our attitude toward sin changes. Our love for God grows.
The Holy Spirit forms the character of Christ in us.
“Where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty. And we all… beholding the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory, just as by the Spirit of the Lord.” — 2 Corinthians 3:17–18
This is the mystery of sanctification:
We do not make ourselves like Christ; the Holy Spirit transforms us into the likeness of Christ.
Yet this requires our surrender and obedience.
- GLORIFICATION — PERFECTION IN THE LIKENESS OF CHRIST
Justification looks back to what God has already done.
Sanctification is the work taking place in our lives today.
Glorification is the perfection that is still to come.
Even now, we are being transformed into greater likeness to Christ.
One day, we will be made fully like Him.
“When He appears, we shall be like Him.” — 1 John 3:2
Glorification is the final state in which we are completely delivered from the presence and power of sin and brought into participation in the glory of Christ.
Our present bodies are perishable.
But in the resurrection:
What is perishable will become imperishable. What is mortal will put on immortality. What is sown in dishonour will be raised in glory.
“This mortal must put on immortality.” — 1 Corinthians 15:53
That is glorification.
THE ROLE OF THE HOLY SPIRIT
When we look at these three truths together, the work of the Holy Spirit becomes very clear.
The Father purposed our salvation. The Son accomplished salvation through the cross. The Holy Spirit applies that salvation in our lives.
The Holy Spirit:
Brings us to Christ, establishes us in Christ, forms Christ in us, and ultimately brings us into the glory of Christ.
Therefore, salvation is not merely the forgiveness of sins.
Salvation means receiving Christ, living in Christ, becoming like Christ, and finally entering into the glory of Christ.
THE THREE IN ONE SENTENCE
Justification:
“Through the righteousness of Christ, I stand righteous before God.”
Sanctification:
“Through the work of the Holy Spirit, I am being transformed day by day into the likeness of Christ.”
Glorification:
“At the coming of Christ and in the resurrection, I will be made complete in His likeness.”
Therefore, the Christian life can be understood this way:
From guilt → to righteousness.
From the nature of sin → to a life of holiness.
From a weak mortal body → to a glorious resurrection body.
THE MOST BEAUTIFUL TRUTH
In justification, God accepts me.
In sanctification, God changes me.
In glorification, God makes me complete in the likeness of His Son.
Therefore, the journey of a believer can be understood through three questions:
“What was I in Christ?” → Justification.
“What am I becoming in Christ?” → Sanctification.
“What will I ultimately become in Christ?” → Glorification.
The centre of this journey is not man.
The centre is Jesus Christ.
The beginning is in Christ. The journey is with Christ. The transformation is by the Holy Spirit. The completion is in the glory of Christ.
“He who has begun a good work in you will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ.” — Philippians 1:6
