Current Spiritual Challenges Among Believers
1. Prosperity Gospel
God is the One who blesses us. However, presenting the gospel as if every believer will certainly become wealthy, or that giving more money will guarantee receiving more money in return, is not right.
The idea that “if you give this much, you will receive this much blessing” can turn faith into a transaction.
Jesus said:
“Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth… But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven.”
(Matthew 6:19–20)
True Christian prosperity should not be understood only in terms of money. Life in Christ, love, peace, holiness, and a relationship with God are among the true riches of the Christian life.
2. The Idea That “If I Say It, It Will Happen”
We should pray with faith and put our hope in God. However, the idea that God must do something simply because we have declared it is not correct.
Jesus gave us the model for prayer:
“Your will be done.”
(Matthew 6:10)
Faith does not control God. Faith means trusting God and submitting to His will.
3. Control in the Name of Prophecy
God can speak through prophecy. However, every prophecy we hear should be tested.
“Test everything; hold fast what is good.”
(1 Thessalonians 5:21)
Using the statement “God told me” to control someone’s personal decisions about marriage, employment, business, money, or other matters is not healthy spiritual leadership.
If a prophecy contradicts the Word of God, it should not be accepted.
4. Sickness and Faith
God is able to heal, and we should pray for healing.
However, it is wrong to tell a sick person, “You are sick because you do not have enough faith.”
Along with prayer, appropriate medical treatment can also be received. God can work through miracles as well as through medical treatment.
5. A Faith That Seeks Only Miracles
Miracles demonstrate the power of God. However, the center of the Christian faith is not miracles; it is Christ.
More important than what miracle happened in a meeting is whether people came to know Christ, repented, and grew in holiness through it.
6. Ministry Centered on Money
Ministry requires money, and giving toward God’s work is a good thing.
However, giving money should not be turned into a way of purchasing blessings.
Promises such as “If you give this amount, you will receive this blessing” can lead to financial exploitation of believers.
There should be transparency and accountability in the financial matters of ministry.
7. Christ Above the Minister
A good minister can and should be respected. However, no human being should be placed in the position of Christ.
The attitude that “because this person said it, it must definitely be the word of God” is dangerous.
The believers in Berea examined even Paul’s teaching through the Scriptures (Acts 17:11).
The foundation of our faith is not a human being, but Christ and the Word of God.
8. Abuse of Spiritual Authority
Spiritual leaders have responsibilities within the church. However, their position should not be used to control the lives of others.
Statements such as “If you do not obey what I say, you are disobeying God” can create unhealthy spiritual pressure.
Jesus demonstrated leadership not by dominating His disciples, but by washing their feet.
Christian leadership is first and foremost service.
9. Blaming Every Problem on Demons
Spiritual warfare is real. However, it is not right to say that every problem a person experiences is caused by demonic activity.
Some problems may have spiritual causes. Others may have physical, psychological, family, or financial causes.
Therefore, every situation should be approached with discernment rather than being interpreted in the same way.
10. Experience Must Not Be Placed Above Scripture
A person may have a remarkable experience, dream, or vision.
However, saying “I experienced it” alone does not prove that it is a teaching applicable to everyone or that it is true.
Experiences should be tested by Scripture; Scripture should not be changed to fit our experiences.
11. Making Human Rules into God’s Commands
There may be personal convictions regarding clothing, hair, food, and many other controversial issues we see today.
However, when human traditions and personal opinions are turned into compulsory commands from God, it becomes legalism.
Holiness is important. But true holiness is not merely about outward appearance; it should also be seen in the heart and character.
12. Continuing in Sin in the Name of Grace
The idea that “God’s grace is available, so it does not matter how we live” is not a correct teaching.
St.Paul asks:
“Are we to continue in sin that grace may abound? By no means!”
(Romans 6:1–2)
God’s grace is not a reason for us to continue in sin. It is the power that transforms us to live a new life in Christ.
13. Emotions Alone Are Not Proof of Spirituality
People may cry, rejoice, clap, shout, or fall during worship.
However, these experiences alone should not be considered proof of the work of the Holy Spirit.
The fruit of the Spirit should be visible in our lives:
“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace…”
(Galatians 5:22)
The transformation of a person’s life is more important than the emotional experience in a meeting.
14. A Large Crowd Alone Is Not Spiritual Growth
It is encouraging when many people attend a church. However, the number of people alone is not a measure of spiritual growth.
Jesus said:
“Make disciples of all nations.”
(Matthew 28:19)
Are believers growing in the Word? Are they living like Christ? Are they growing in holiness? Are they loving others?
These are signs of genuine discipleship.
15. The Gospel Must Not Be Commercialized
The gospel is not a product to be sold.
When prayer, anointing, deliverance, or blessing are connected to money in such a way that people are told, “Give money and you will receive a spiritual blessing,” the nature of the gospel is distorted.
Peter strongly confronted Simon when he attempted to obtain spiritual power through money (Acts 8:18–23).
How Should We Test Everything?
When we hear a teaching, prophecy, or ministry, we can ask some simple questions:
Does it make Christ the center?
Does it agree with the Word of God?
Does it teach repentance and holy living?
Is the fruit of the Holy Spirit evident?
Are prophecies being tested?
Is there transparency in financial matters?
Are people being directed toward a human being or toward Christ?
Is Christ given greater importance than miracles?
Are people merely being made followers, or are they being made disciples of Christ?
Christ is our foundation; the Word of God is our standard.
“Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.”
(Hebrews 13:8)
